Aim:
To measure and compare tissue perfusion in free gingival grafts (FGGs) and the collagen matrix (mucoderm®) in the oral cavity over time.
Material/Methods:
Vestibuloplasty in the lower edentulous jaw was performed during implant exposure, either with FGGs from the palate or with mucoderm® in 18 patients (9/group), respectively. Tissue perfusion of the soft tissue grafts was measured using laser-doppler-spectrophotometer intraoperatively on postoperative days 2, 5, 10, 30 and between days 60 and 90.
Results/Conclusion:
Healing was uneventful. Both groups presented mature keratinized mucosa around implants after healing. Perfusion parameter after vestibuloplasty substantially increased in FGG and mucoderm® group within the first 10 postoperative days without significant differences. Results indicate that tissue blood flow was established at a very similar speed.
Conclusions:
Although integration of FGGs and mucoderm® develop in a biologically different way, both transplants show comparable perfusion patterns. mucoderm® resulted in comparable graft vascularization and generated sufficient keratinized tissue.
